Hey Eldri--

Calvin is doing VERY well! Thanks for asking! He's almost 15 now, and huge--5'8" and about 170 pounds. Straight-A student and taking very challenging classes in his first year of high school. He has (alas) stopped playing soccer for now, and misses it, but has taken up marching band, pep band, orchestra and rugby as alternate pursuits. :o) He's busy, intelligent, articulate and healthy. What more could a parent want? :o)

Hey "K"--

The issue with this particular incident was his sugary fingers, which caused the "HI" reading. We adjusted based on the ratios in the pump for the +500 reading, and then had to scramble when he was actually much lower than 500. His pump did and does calculate the correction boluses based on pre-programmed ratios.
Thanks for a good question!

Hi,

I was just reading this and thought it very interesting to see how a young teen goes about dealing with Type 1 now... I am a Type 1 Diabetic who was diagnosed at the end of my teen years and didn't get a pump until I was in my early twenties. Anyway, I'm just wondering why Calvin is using a pump that doesn't automatically calculate his bolus amounts for high blood glucose readings and for his meals? I've been on an insulin pump for well over 9 years now, and all three of my pumps have calculated my boluses based on my glucose, target range and carbohydrates. I actually didn't even know there was a pump out there that DIDN'T do that automatically. It's a HUGE help. :O)

Hey, I am an 10 year old w/ type 1 as well. I play for the Hollywood Hurricanes with coach Sean Moran. He told me and my dad about your site. Our team will be playing in the Tigard sunday league this year and look foward to meeting you.
