Putting a human face to science

faces: An Introduction

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Cooking Up A Story is excited and honored to partner with The Center For Health Research (TCHR), and to share their stories with Cooking Up A Story audiences. TCHR is funded by Kaiser Permanente, and by individual research grants provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others. The main goal of TCHR is to conduct medical research, and help implement better methods into practice that improve the lives of individuals throughout the world.

This new segment, faces, will be indistinguishable from the style of our main show, though it may not pertain directly to food. TCHR is paying us to produce these stories, and in addition to allowing us to share them with you, their funding is helping us to continue producing Cooking Up A Story. This organization is also doing something rare: they are allowing us to tell their stories as we see fit to do. They are providing us with research topics to explore, and names of their researchers to contact, so that we may develop the stories in a natural and organic manner. They believe, as do we, people are looking for personal stories and information that are real, and that are truthful. We are proud to announce the start of faces: putting a human face to TCHR scientists at work, and those who participate in their studies.

faces: On The Road To Weight Loss Maintenance

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. According to the Endocrine Society’s “Handbook On Obesity In America”, 30% of all Americans are obese, and two-thirds are overweight. While people struggle to lose weight, and keep it off, there is no shortage of weight loss programs and participants. The problem is not just losing the weight, the bigger problem is maintaining the weight loss over time.

The Kaiser Permanente Center For Health Research, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, is leading a national long-term study that may offer hope to millions of overweight people. Surprisingly until this study, there has not been a weight loss study that has followed participants over a long period of time.

This story about Bob Brandon is a story about a new approach to weight loss that seeks to address a complex range of factors to help individuals control their weight, and not gain it back. According to Victor Stevens, PhD., senior investigator for this study, the participants that have gone through the three year program, the majority have learned how to successfully manage their weight. The official results of this study will be published soon.
