Sounds to me like he is saying the chemical companies are obtaining a monopoly on plant seeds. “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

Does that sound familiar? It’s a quote from Revelation 6:6, when people have monopolies they control the price of the goods and products. The future doesn’t look to good to me.

Nice post with several fascinating ideas! I can’t say that I totally agree with everything you have suggested here, but there are several relevant information you have emphasized that can be very usable on gardening and related topics. Please keep offering more information on this topic and associated topics, as there are many out there like me who are attempting to get to know the ups and downs.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree, the answer is not to have “big government” but we do need an effective government that represents the interest of the people. Powerful corporations can circumvent the market by virtue of their size, and political power.

The only counterbalance that will insure a level playing field— so farmers and eaters can make their own choices— is for government to prevent monopolies from forming, or if they already exist (and I believe they do), move to eliminate their monopolistic control. There may be some very limited reasons to allow the existence of certain monopolies, but in the agriculture sector, I can’t see any public good in allowing them.

I think the question at the end of this article presents a false choice: We don’t have to choose between big corporations controlling the seed supply or big governments controlling it. We just need to go back to seed saving and exchanging on a local level.
