Aggregating food related news worthy of digest.
Editor’s note: this post has been re-edited as the deadline approaches, their Kickstarter campaign is within range of succeeding but they need your support—now.
I received an email from my friends at the blog, Civil Eats. The email starts out by saying that they have been working hard for 5 years writing daily articles that provide critical information to help people understand our complex food system. Over that period of time, the contributors have not received a dime for their work.
It’s all been done for free!
Now, I believe Civil Eats is one of the best food and sustainability blogs on the internet. Increasingly, on the traditional media side, it’s become difficult to find good, reliable sources for information, and the food and sustainability realm is no exception. As such, they are an important, and vital resource that serves the public good. Like any other form of professional writing, including for print magazines and newspapers, writing for the internet requires time, skill, and dedication. In other words, it’s work.
Civil Eats is asking 4000 people to contribute $25 each so they can continue producing work, presumably on an annual basis. Without reader support, this unique blog may not be able to continue. Given the importance of an informed citizenry to effect change at the individual level, and also to shape public policy, we may have to help financially support some of these better blogs that offer real value.
As a regular CUPS reader, for those who can, please consider contributing to their Kickstarter campaign.
