December 30, 2010 Dr. Vandana Shiva attended this year’s Velo-City 2010 Conference, held in Denmark last June. Outside, amidst bicycles, people, and sunshine, she answered questions posed by Sustainable Cities ™ about qualities, most promising initiatives, and challenges facing cities to be more sustainable.
“I think urban gardens are very, very exciting. Even a few years ago you couldn’t have imagined it, that this would happen, that people could tear down parking lots and create gardens rather than tear down gardens and create parking lots.”
Dr. Shiva mentions Berlin as a good example of a city with many urban gardens, citing the influx of migrant cultures and the fact it has “taken a new life after the Wall came down.”
