Circle Design Into Fabric: An Evolution

To keep my creative juices flowing, I participate in several weekly online challenges that are focused with the artist in mind. A recent one was a drawing prompt for ‘circles’. One of the nice things with drawing geometric shapes is it becomes meditative fairly quickly. One circle, then another, then another, and another…you get the idea. As I drew and began to connect them, I was reminded of the Steampunk’d show now on Netflix. Gears were used in many ways – as fashion statements and decorations on walls. I began to see gears as my circles connected and worked together. Soon a circle design emerged.

After I finished the drawing, I decided it needed some color. The circles began to remind me of cross-sections of semiprecious stones.

Once that was done, I was all set to move on the next challenge – make a pattern using black and white plus 1 color. Hmmm. Then it hit me – use the circles! Fortunately I had scanned the circles prior to painting their centers. Next I added more embellishments to the circles. And moved them around until I had what I thought was a pleasing black and white pattern with one color – blue!

This is one of my favorite patterns to date. I really like the rich color of blue and the pattern of circles. I thought it would look really nice on a top – which could be paired with black slacks or jeans. Leggings were the next clothing item of choice. A plain white or black top would accentuate them nicely. Lastly I went for the tote bag with the black straps – a fun carry-all bag for any occasion!
