The term ‘fight like cats and dogs’ doesn’t seem to apply on this urban homestead.
Charlyn Ellis of 21st Street Urban Homestead talks about her animals: a rabbit, 2 cats, a small flock of chickens and a nest of honeybees and how they all get along together in their enclosed backyard space. Like a United Nations peace-keeping force comprised of different countries, order and cooperation still manage to rule the day despite potential cultural and language differences.
Even on a small scale as in this example, this form of diversified integrated farming is an efficient way to build a healthy food garden. There’s also the potential culinary perks that come along with raising chickens for eggs and rabbits for meat, though in Charlyn’s case, her rabbit is more a pet, decidedly not for eating.
