Garden Trellis Ideas for Tomatoes and Other Crops

Here are some seasoned garden trellis ideas to enable your plants to climb as they grow, and to provide the necessary support for heavier plants as they become weighted down with maturing fruit.

Weston Miller, Oregon State University’s Community and Urban Horticulturist, talks about different types of trellis systems for a variety of plants:

  • tomatoes
  • cucumbers
  • peas
  • beans

By keeping plants off the ground it also gives others more room to grow.

Miller shares different styles of trellises – tomato cages, a teepee trellis, a scaffolding trellis, and stakes – several of which can be made from materials often found at home.
