Hood River Valley harvest Festival Pumpkin Carving

While attending the recent Harvest Fest in Hood River, Oregon, I came upon a man immersed in carving a pumpkin – a very large pumpkin. 1343 pounds to be exact.

The front of the pumpkin really grabbed my attention – the face had a devilish grin on it as he swallowed some poor fellow. Yes, those are boots protruding from the corner of his upturned smile. It got the attention of a lot of people, for many were gathering around to see what was being carved and to snap a few photos too.

My eyes drifted over to watch the master pumpkin carver, Scott Cully, scrape and carve into the left side of the pumpkin. I realized it was yet another face. I asked him how long he had been carving and he responded, 25 years. It took him 2 days to carve this particular pumpkin.

Did I check out the other side? There’s more?, I asked. I walked over the right side and saw the third face! Gruesome, he looked like he was ready to take a bite out of anyone who came too close. I asked the artist if his creation had a title for the carved pumpkin and without missing a beat he said, “The Three Faces of the Republican Party” (Ted Cruz, John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell).

Happy Halloween!
