The Aquaponics Project - Cooking Up a Story

University Students Learn Aquaponics Farming

Tilapia, anyone?

For The Aquaponics Project, University of Pittsburg students are involved in a food demonstration project that may have wider implications across the country.

Using customized shipping containers stacked on top of each other, the students have constructed a two-story aquaponics system with an available greenhouse. This enclosed system is able to grow lettuce plants and raise tilapia fish using less energy and requiring less physical space. Relying upon solar panels to run their water pumps, the fish droppings are cost-efficiently converted into fertilizer for the lettuce plants, creating two different types of products to market to restaurants.

In addition, this modular system provides a learning environment that can be modeled by other educational institutions, as well, help foster entrepreneurial skills.
