November 15, 2010 Continuing on the #meatlessmonday theme… If you’ve ever wondered how much of an impact is caused by our love of eating meat, watch this short documentary video by Inform. According to the film, it takes 7 pounds of grain and 2500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of hamburger. Then there’s the methane that is produced from all that manure. It all adds up.
You can begin to see how removing meat as a food choice one day a week might actually make a difference. If not, how about this from the Environmental Defense Fund: “Having one meat-free day per week would be the same as taking 8 million cars off American roads.”
Next time you go to purchase meat, think about its source and ask questions. Is it locally raised? Has it been grass-fed? And, consider a meatless menu at least once a week. It’s up to us – all of us.
